La Union ambush victims recuperating

AGOO, La Union: La Union Police spokesman, Superintendent Artemio Infante, said that the four victims in a bomb explosion intended for La Union second district Rep. Eufranio “Franny” Eriguel were recuperating, while another remains in critical condition.

Infante identified the victims as Senior Police Officer 2 Jack Baguan, Eriguel’s police escort; Samuel Ofiaza and Anthony Casem, his personal aides; and his driver Jovanne Cacayuran.

Cacayuran remains in critical condition at the hospital, while the three others were declared in stable condition and recuperating, contrary to earlier reports that two of them died.

On Saturday morning, a remotely controlled bomb hit Eriguel’s back-up vehicle, a van, as his convoy was on a campaign sortie in Barangay Santa Barbara here, about 50 meters away from his residence.

Police said the bomb used in the attack was the same kind of explosive being used by terrorists in Mindanao. It totally destroyed the motorcycle where it was mounted.

The lawmaker’s car incurred minor damage, but the back-up vehicle was severely damaged.

Eriguel, a supporter of Vice President Jejomar Binay, is not seeking reelection. Instead, his wife, Agoo Mayor Sandra Eriguel, is running for a congressional post, while their daughter Stephanie is a candidate for mayor in Agoo.

He said he was waiting for the full report of the investigation.
