SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union: La Union students received accolades from townmates led by San Fernando City Mayor Pablo Ortega for winning 18 medals at the International Mathematics Competition.
Jan Vincent Simbol, a Grade 8 pupil of the Brain and Heart of a Christian Educational Institution (BHC), took the only Gold Medal in the Singapore and Asian Math Schools Olympiad while his schoolmates, Brylle Jaden Louise Ordoño, a Grade 6 student earned a Silver.
The bronze medalists were: Joven Augustus Costales; Mary Alyenne Josephine Azarcon; Lovely Anne Nullar; and Paul Jeremiah Naraval.
Jan Vincent, who was chosen among the 9-member team in the 2015 World Junior Sudoku Championship in Beijing, China last July, also won a bronze medal in the 18-under category in a Sudoku contest.
He was also among the 200 students who set an official Guinness World Record for the largest multi-Sudoku puzzle, which consists of 200 standard grids.
The Philippine team, which has gained 216 medals, was the overall winner in the 11th International Mathematics Competition in Singapore that was participated by 12-member nations.
In the International Mathematics Wizards Challenge held in Hongkong last August, Ralph Ernest Argana got a Silver medal while Yvonne Lorein Malinao and Mary Alyenne Josephine Azarcon took the Bronze in their respective grade levels.
Andrea Zyrene Palisoc, a Grade 2 pupil, bagged the bronze medal at the 2015 World Mathematics Invi-tational held in Guangzou, China last August 13.
BHC principal Loreta Ce-priaso said they will not stop competing in standard international tilts as they continue to work in excellence, calling her team as “mathletes,” wards of the Mathematics Trainers Guild, Phils., the private organization that promotes excellence in mathematics education in the country.
