A covenant signed in connection with the observance of International Workers’ Day on May 1, Labor Day, also served as a declaration of support by the Partido Manggagawa (PM) to Manila Mayor Joseph “Erap” Estrada.
The support was announced by former Congressman Renato “Ka Rene” Magtubo, PM national chairperson, after he signed an agreement with the Manila government on the protection of workers’ rights and welfare.
Magtubo said that the 5,000-member strong chapter of PM in Manila is committed to fully support Estrada’s re-election bid.
[Of all those who became mayor of Manila, it is only Mayor Erap whom we have seen to sincerely address the interests of the workers],” he stressed.
Estrada is seeking a second term under the Partido ng Masang Pilipino. His opponents are former Mayor Alfredo Lim and Manila District 5 Rep. Amado Bagatsing.
The PM chief said the covenant of his group with Estrada contains massive job generation as well as support for micro, small and medium enterprises, the institutionalization of labor law compliance in all work places and establishments in the city, social protection of workers through membership in the SSS and PhilHealth, and through ample support to the youth, women, persons with disabilities (PWDs) and senior citizens, and the establishment of a Workers Affairs Office (WAO).
The agreement is extremely important since Manila is the capital city where majority of the residents are workers.
[Mayor Erap is the only mayor of Manila, or in the whole county, whom we have seen as determined to enter into an agreement with the workers in order to pursue the interests of our sector and of all poor people],” Magtubo said.
Estrada, through city administrator Jojo Alcovendaz, commended the workers for their important contribution to the community.
[Like other countries around the world, Labor Day is exclusively commemorated to salute the workers, for their sacrifices and efforts for the benefit of their families, community, and country,]” he said.
[As mayor of Manila, my only aspiration is to help you improve and develop your life. I assure you that I will continue pursuing the interests of the workers in the coming years].”
