The University of Perpetual Help System-Dalta (UPHSD) Lady Altas upset the San Beda College (SBC) Red Lionesses, 2-1, in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Season 92 women’s soft tennis tournament at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Courts in Malate, Manila on Thursday.
Ana Saguiped and Jamaica Daquio beat San Beda’s Alyanna Viloria and Odessa Arzaga in the first doubles match, 5-2.
“I told my players to give their all. Since we lost to Benilde yesterday, I told them that we have to make a way to win over San Beda,” said UPHSD head coach Erdilyn Peralta.
Elleen Peralta sustained the winning momentum for the Lady Altas by routing Emily Vasquez, 4-0.
San Beda’s Princess Catindig and Mikaela Javier notched the lone victory for the Red Lionesses at the expense of Perpetual’s Noreen Subol and Starr Macias in the last doubles match, 5-1.
“All of the teams performed really well. The level of competition is very high. We are just lucky since our players are seasonal because it still depends on their composure, on how they play, and what’s going on in their minds. It is a matter of mental toughness. Earlier, we were so lucky to win over San Beda,” Peralta added.
Meanwhile, the De La Salle-College of St. Benilde (CSB) Lady Blazers swept the Colegio de San Juan de Letran (CSJL) Lady Knights, 3-0.
The San Beda Red Lionesses, the UPHSD Lady Altas, and the CSB Lady Blazers were all tied at the top spot with a 2-1 win-loss record, while the Letran Lady Knights remained at the bottom of the standings with a 0-3 card.
In the men’s soft tennis demonstration tournament, the San Beda Red Lions completed a come-from-behind victory against the UPHSD Altas, 2-1.
Dennis Alano and Ed Parangan drew the first blood against San Beda’s Whismark Basanal and Erick Fernandez, 4-1.
The Red Lions barged into the winning column with Aijay Canera thumping Joshua Lagambay, 3-0.
Alfred Directo and Vince Carlo Ramiscal secured the victory for San Beda at the expense of Justine Pareño and Elbert Bacong, 4-0.
The Arellano University (AU) Chiefs edged the CSB Blazers, duplicating their first-round victory, 2-1.
The San Beda Red Lions hold an 8-0 card, while the UPHSD Altas and the AU Chiefs sat at second spot with a 5-3 record, followed by the CSB Blazers with a 2-6, and the Emilio Aguinaldo College (EAC) Generals with 0-8.
