De La Salle University will battle University of the East (UE) for the second spot in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 79 women’s basketball tournament on Wednesday at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Currently holding a 4-1 win-loss card, the Lady Archers beat the Adamson University Lady Falcons, 69-61, while the UE Lady Warriors trounced the Ateneo de Manila University Lady Eagles, 60-50, on Saturday.
Both teams outrebounded their opponents with La Salle tallying 58 boards compared to Adamson’s 41 and UE collecting 47 compared to Ateneo’s 33. The Lady Archers dished 19 assists against Lady Falcons’ 12.
“We’re not the same team from last year. We’re not an Ara Abaca-driven team and we’re not Camille Claro-driven team. There’s no Snow Peñaranda team. Again, all five guys have their roles. Whoever’s open, they need to give the extra pass and whoever’s given that pass needs to make a shot. So we need every five guys within the game to make a point and to play team defense also,” said La Salle head coach Cholo Villanueva.
Parading good defense, UE and La Salle also limited their opponents to 20 baskets only in the span of 40 minutes. Adamson shot 20 out 64, while Ateneo scored 20 baskets out of 60.
“They’re very tough team. They’re always trapping. They always outhustle their opponent so we need to match the intensity especially they’re big guys. Most of their big guys are very hard working so we just need to match their intensity and maybe go over it,” Villanueva shared his thoughts about the UE Lady Warriors.
Camille Claro topscored La Salle with 14 points, while Jamie Roxas and Snow Peñaranda combined for 22 points and 15 boards. On the other hand, Love Sto. Domingo paced UE with 18 markers and nine rebounds, followed by Eunique Chan and Ruthlaine Tacula with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
The University of the Philippines Lady Maroons will try to halt their losing skid against the Ateneo Lady Eagles at 8 a.m.
