The National University (NU) Lady Bulldogs aim to sweep the elimination round when they face the University of the Philippines (UP) Lady Maroons in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 79 women’s basketball tournament today at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.
“Definitely, we’ll still focus on the last game (against UP). We don’t take away that we will not play well. It’s always go forward. Don’t look back on what’s happening at the back. We just look forward on what’s going to happen. So it’s a good game. We’ll be preparing for UP,” said NU head coach Patrick Aquino.
The NU Lady Bulldogs routed the Far Eastern University (FEU) Lady Tamaraws, 78-42, last November 5.
Dominating under the basket, the Lady Bulldogs posted 62 inside points against FEU’s 18. They also took advantage of the Lady Tamaraws’ 38 turnovers to tally 32 markers.
Gemma Miranda top scored for NU with 21 points. Afril Bernardino recorded a triple-double outing of 17 markers, 10 boards, and 10 dishes, while Jack Animam had a double-double performance of 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Angelica Gerner owned the lone bright spot for FEU with 16 markers and 12 boards.
“Just keep on working hard. And remind (them) every day that the ball is round, anything can happen and if you don’t work hard, if you don’t play together, it might be different story. So don’t lose that opportunity that we’re having right now. Just grab it and be happy with the opportunity you have,” Aquino replied when asked how he prevents complacency in his team
Meanwhile, the UP Lady Maroons suffered their 11th loss at the hand of the De La Salle University (DLSU) Lady Archers last November 12.
The Lady Archers trounced the Lady Maroons, 65-48, after shooting five three-pointers out of 16 attempts against UP’s two treys out of 11.
Khate Castillo led La Salle with 22 points, while Snow Peñaranda added 13 more markers. Ma. Therese Medina led UP with 14 points, followed by Ma. Antonia Wong with 10.
The NU Lady Bulldogs are still leading with a 13-0 record, while the UP Lady Maroons settled at the last spot with a 2-11 card.
Second seed La Salle Lady Archers will face their arch rivals Ateneo de Manila University Lady Eagles at 8 a.m., while third seed University of the East Lady Warriors will battle the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigresses at 10 a.m.
After the NU-UP clash, the Adamson University Lady Falcons will keep their final four hopes alive as they go against the FEU Lady Tamaraws at 3 p.m.
