NATIONAL University steamrolled to an 84-55 win over University of the Philippines to jump straight in the UAAP Season 79 women’s basketball Finals yesterday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
It was the Lady Bulldogs’ third straight 14-0 elimination round sweep, moving two wins away of capturing a third consecutive championship.
Reigning MVP Afril Bernardino led NU with 21 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists while reserves Je-anne Canelo and Florymae Ceno chipped in 14 and 12 points, respectively.
The Lady Bulldogs have won 46 straight games dating back from 2014 season.
De La Salle, behind Khate Castillo’s 22 points and Snow Peñaranda’s 17-point, 16-rebound effort, beat Ateneo, 71-60, to secure the twice-to-beat bonus in the step-ladder semifinals with a 11-3 card.
Love Sto. Domingo tallied 25 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals while Ruthlaine Tacula added 17 markers as University of the East turned back University of Santo Tomas, 64-58, to secure the No. 3 seed in the playoffs.
Adamson University got a lifeline on its quest for the last semis berth with a 57-53 win over Far Eastern University in the last game.
The Lady Warriors wound up with a 10-4 slate, while the Tigresses and the Lady Falcons ended up tied in fourth at 6-8. The playoff between Adamson University and UST is set next week, with the winner taking on UE in the first stepladder semifinals.

Winderlich Coyoca shot 20 points as titleholder NU fended off Ateneo, 73-68, for a 2-0 record, while Adamson University made an early statement in the juniors division as it defeated FEU-Diliman, 78-65, for its second straight win yesterday with Gerry Abadiano leading the way with 14 points.
Dustin Angeles and Rey Balundo teamed up with 19 points as UE ended a 29-year losing skid that stretched for four seasons with an 87-77 tripping of UST.
Juan Gomez De Liaño, younger brother of UP rookie Javi, had 20 points, nine rebounds and six assists as UP Integrated School gave rookie coach Paolo Mendoza his first win by blasting last season’s runner-up De La Salle-Zobel, 81-59.
