National University (NU) will be gunning for its seventh win today in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 76 women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.
NU takes on Far Eastern University at 4 p.m. while former titlist University of Santo Tomas (UST) tackles winless University of the East (UE) at 2 p.m.
The Lady Bulldogs holds the solo second spot with a 6-1 mark behind defending champion De La Salle University, which completed a seven-game sweep of the first round.
Last year’s runner-up Ateneo de Manila University dropped to third (5-2) followed by FEU (4-3), Adamson University (3-4), UST (2-5), University of the Philippines (1-6) and UE (0-7).
The towering Santiago sisters—Dindin and Jaja—are expected to lead the attack line of the Lady Bulldogs along with power-hitting Mypla Pablo, Aiko Urdas and Carmina Aganon, and setter Ivy Perez.
NU closed-out the first round with a 26-28, 25-21, 30-28, 25-20 win over Adamson with Aganon and Jaja combining for 29 points.
FEU, on the other hand, also proved that it has what it takes to make it to the Final Four this time. The Lady Tamaraws surprised the Lady Falcons, 25-21, 25-20, 29-31, 19-25, 15-10.
Rookie Bernadeth Pons had a career-high 27 points for FEU. Remy Palma chipped in 16 points and Marie Simborio added 14 points.
In the men’s division, UP faces UE at 8:30 a.m. followed by the Ateneo-NU game at 10 a.m.
