Lady Bulldogs near Finals, Archers nab solo second


NATIONAL University made quick work of Far Eastern University, 78-42, to put the defending two-time champions on the brink of clinching an outright championship berth in the UAAP Season 79 women’s basketball tournament on Saturday at the Araneta Coliseum.

Reigning MVP Afril Ber­nardino flirted with a rare quadruple-double with 17 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists and nine steals, while Gemma Miranda had 21 points, nine boards and five assists the Lady Bulldogs continued their dominance with 13 straight wins.

NU, which is also on a 45-game winning streak dating back from 2014, can jump straight to the best-of-three Finals with a victory over already eliminated University of the Philippines on Nov. 15.

De La Salle, behind Khate Castillo’s 18 points, overcame University of the East, 70-64, to take solo second place with a 9-3 card.

The Lady Archers will shoot for the twice-to-beat semifinals incentive against the Lady Maroons on Saturday.

Camille Claro added 17 points, six rebounds and five assists while Joahanna Arciga had 14 points and eight boards for De La Salle.

The Lady Warriors fell in third spot with their fourth loss in 12 contests, putting their twice-to-beat aspirations in doubt.

Love Sto. Domingo paced UE with 18 points and 14 rebounds while Eunique Chan tossed in 14 markers and nine boards.

The Lady Tamaraws bowed out of contention with their ninth defeat in 12 matches.
