Notching their 41st victory, the National University (NU) Lady Bulldogs annihilated the Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) Lady Eagles, 80-56, in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 79 women’s basketball tournament at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City on Saturday.
With 4:41 minutes remaining in the third quarter, Lady Eagle Alyssa Villamor drained a jumper, 58-27.
Gemma Miranda hit a layup for NU in the 3:43 minute mark, 62-29.
With Melissa Newsome drawing the foul, Afril Bernardino sank her two free throws, 64-33. Samantha Harada then banked a three-pointer with 38.4 second left in the third period, 67-33.
Jack Animam opened the last frame with a basket inside the paint, 69-33. Je-anne Camelo hit another trey in the 9:16 minute mark to extend NU’s lead to 39, 72-33.
Midway through the last frame, Animam scored a putback off Miranda’s miss, 76-39.
With 3:52 minutes remaining in the match, Ateneo’s Villamor sank a three-pointer, 78-42. Miranda then drove to the basket for NU, 80-42.
The Lady Eagles tallied three consecutive baskets inside the paint through the efforts of Villamor, Newsome, and Nicole Cancio, 80-50.
Katrina Guytingco banked on her free throws after Jhiane Layug gave away the foul with 20.3 seconds left, 80-52.
Mary Moslares hit a buzzer-beating jumper for the blue-and-white squad, 80-56.
Bernardino top scored NU with a double-double performance of 27 points and 10 rebounds, followed by Miranda with 22 markers. Animam also showcased another double-double performance of 12 points and 12 rebounds.
“The big three played out good again and the support of Camelo, the outside shooting came out again today. Camelo and Reño with the turnout, making easy for the three to go inside,” said NU head coach Patrick Aquino.
Villamor and Cancio led Ateneo with 11 and 10 markers, respectively.
The Lady Eagles tallied more rebounds with 41 against Lady Bulldogs’ 36.
“They were really aggressive so one thing I reminded them, you have to be disciplined. At the latter part like the fourth quarter, they were like doing their thing for their own selves. I told them to avoid that, you gotta be disciplined and you gotta playing as a team all the time,” Aquino added.
The NU Lady Bulldogs remained undefeated at 9-0, while the Ateneo Lady Eagles settled at sixth place with a 3-6 win-loss card.
The Adamson University (AdU) Lady Falcons dealt the University of the Philippines (UP) Fighting Maroons its eighth loss this season, 67-60.
Ma. Antonia Wong scored a putback off Ma. Patricia Pesquera’s three-pointer miss and sank her bonus free throw as Adamson’s Jo Razalo drew the foul with 1:14 minutes left in the match, 65-60. However, Wong committed a costly turnover, sending the ball out with 45.7 left.
Lady Falcon Kaye Pingol hit a layup in the nine-second mark, 66-60.
Jamie Alcoy led Adamson with 17 points, while Jonalyn Lacson added 14 markers. UP’s Pesquera and Christine Aliermo combined for 32 points and 15 rebounds, while Daphne Esplana notched 10 more markers.
The Adamson Lady Falcons are currently No.4 with a 4-5 slate while the UP Lady Maroons carry a 1-8 record.
