The Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) Lady Eagles wiped out the twice-to-beat advantage of the De La Salle University (DLSU) Lady Archers, 3-0, in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 79 women’s stepladder semifinals at the Rizal Memorial Badminton Hall in Malate, Manila on Wednesday.

Lady Archer Monica Arianne Rivera took away the first set from Patricia Edrika Malibiran in the first singles match, 19-21. Malibiran then retaliated in the next two sets, notching the first win for Ateneo, 21-19, 21-15.

Maria Bianca Ysabel Carlos easily dispatched Alyssa Ysabel Leonardo in straight sets, 21-14, 21-10.

In the first doubles match, La Salle’s duo of Kristelle Dawn Salatan and Aires Amor Montilla edged past Carlos and Chanelle Lunod, 19-21. But Carlos and Lunod did not look back and finished off their archrivals, 21-18, 21-19.

“I think they really played it with heart. That is what’s really important, win or lose, you play it with heart, you give it your all,” said Ateneo head coach Kenie Asuncion-Robles.

In the men’s play, fourth seed Ateneo Blue Eagles survived third seed La Salle Green Archers, 3-2.

Emilio Mangubat Jr. drew the first blood for Ateneo at the expense of John Kenneth Monterubio, 21-17, 21-16.

Green Archer Carlos Antonie Cayanan completed a come-from-behind victory against Nicole Clarence Filart, 21-19, 19-21, 19-21.

Mangubat and Hanz Christian Bernardo survived a three-set thriller against Cayanan and Prince Joshua Monterubio, 21-19, 18-21, 21-19.

John Kenneth Monterubio and Cayel Pajarillo tied the matches at two-all after sweeping Carlo Glenn Remo and Patrick Gecosala, 15-21, 17-21.

Bernardo then finished off Andrew Pineda in the last singles match, 21-16, 21-16.

“We’re very thankful that they played well today. They followed through so for us coaches, everyone played it with their heart and we’re really happy with their game,” Asuncion-Robles said on the performance of Mangubat and Bernardo.
