• Lady Eagles eye fifth straight win in UAAP volley


    Defending champion Ateneo de Manila University guns for its fifth straight win as it battles Adamson University today in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 78 women’s volleyball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

    The Lady Eagles will collide with the Lady Falcons at 2 p.m. followed by the National University (NU)-University of Santo Tomas (UST) game at 4 p.m.

    The Lady Eagles, unbeaten team in four games are on top of the standings followed by NU (3-1) and De La Salle University (3-1).

    Ateneo stymied a rookie-laden University of the Philippines (UP) side in straight sets, 25-19, 25-21, 25-21, in their last outing with two-time Most Valuable Player Alyssa Valdez leading the charge.

    Besides Valdez, Ateneo gets additional firepower from middle hitters Maddie Madayag and Bea De Leon as well as open hitter Jhoanna Maraguinot, opposite spiker Amy Ahomiro and league’s best setter Jia Morado.

    The Lady Falcons, on the other hand, are coming off a three-game losing skid.

    Top spikers Jessica Galanza and Mylene Paat were actually producing well for Adamson with the former currently occupying the No. 2 spot in scoring department and the latter the sixth position in that same area.

    Adamson is likely to focus on solidifying its net defense as well as minimizing unforced errors.

    In their 24-26, 27-25, 20-25, 19-25 loss to University of the Philippines last Wednesday, the Lady Falcons allowed their opponents to score 52 points on the attack line.

    They also committed 31 costly errors mostly on net touches.

    NU, for its part, is upbeat after notching three straight wins

    The Lady Bulldogs displayed solid games led by power-hitting spikers Jaja Santiago, Myla Pablo and Jorelle Singh, playmakers Ivy Perez and Rica Diolan and libero Bia General.

    However, they will be facing rejuvenated Tigresses, a 25-18, 25-8, 25-23 winners over University of the East.

    The league’s top scorer Cherry Ann Rondina, skipper EJ Laure, Ria Meneses, Jessey De Leon and Alex Cabanos will be leading the frontline of UST.
