Ateneo de Manila University, last year’s runner-up, defeated University of Santo Tomas (UST), 66-57, giving returning coach John Flores a winning start on Sunday in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 79 women’s basketball tournament at the Araneta Coliseum.
Trina Guytingco and Jonette Uy De Ong teamed up for 24 points as the Lady Eagles bucked a 30-minute delay due to power failure to post their first win.
Flores, who steered Ateneo to 2005 and 2007 championships, took over from Erika Dy who is now one of the school’s board representative.
Bettina Penaflor and Shanda Anies had 16 and 15 points, respectively, for the Tigresses, who failed to give coach Haydee Ong a winning debut.
Coach Mike Fermin, meanwhile, debuted Adamson University with a victory, a 66-61 decision over University of the Philippines.
Kaye Pingol had 12 points while Jamie Alcoy added 11 markers for the Lady Falcons.
Fermin, who formerly coached the men’s basketball team, replaced long-time Lady Falcons mentor Emilia Vega.
Patricia Pesquera had 19 points and 11 rebounds while Ma. Antonia Wong added 14 points for the Lady Maroons.
