Last year’s runner-up Ateneo de Manila University and National University (NU) will be disputing the second finals berth in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 76 women’s volleyball today at the Araneta Coliseum.
The Lady Eagles take on the Lady Bulldogs at 4 p.m.
Ateneo forced a do-or-die game after stunning NU, 25-17, 12-25, 31-29, 28-26, in their first meeting in the stepladder semifinals. Luckily, the second-seeded Lady Bulldogs are twice-to-beat in the semifinals.
As expected, Alyssa Valdez led the scoring cudgels for the Lady Eagles with 29 huge points including 24 attacks and three aces. Open hitter Ella de Jesus and utility spiker Michelle Morente provided the needed backup with 16 and 12 points, respectively.
But the Lady Bulldogs are raring to come back strong this time with the towering Santiago sisters, Jaja and Dindin, leading NU’s offense.
Jaja made 17 points while Dindin had 13 in their last game.
However, the other reliable attackers, Carmina Aganon and last season’s Best Spiker Myla Pablo, were limited to single-digit outputs. Aganon scored nine and Pablo got a measly five-point showing.
The winner-of Ateneo-NU match will be facing defending champion De La Salle University in the finals. The Lady Archers automatically advanced to the finals after sweeping the 14-game elimination round.
Meanwhile, NU starts its title-retention bid in the men’s division when it faces Ateneo in Game 1 of their-best-of-three championship series at 2 p.m. Emil C. Noguera
