Last year’s runner-up Ateneo de Manila University overpowered University of the East (UE), 25-11, 25-15, 25-17, to clip its third straight win in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 76 women’s volleyball tournament on Wednesday at The Arena in San Juan City.
Skipper Alyssa Valdez fired 21 points on 13 spikes, five aces and three blocks to tow the Lady Eagles to a 3-1 mark. Rookie Ana Laureen Gopic and utility spiker Amy Ahomiro contributed nine points each while Aeriel Patno-ngon had four.
Shayna Adorador got a measly six-point output foe the Lady Warriors, who absorbed their fourth straight setback. Team captain Sarina Bulan was limited to just a single point while fellow starter Abegail Ponon had two.
In the men’s division, former champion University of Santo Tomas hurdled past De La Salle University, 25-21, 25-18, 20-25, 17-25, 15-6, in their one-hour and four-minute match.
Veteran attacker Mark Gil Alfafara had a game-high 32 points while Romnick Rico added 20 points for the Growling Tigers.
Red Christiansen paced the Green Archers with 24 points.
Far Eastern University also bucked a sluggish start to post a come-from-behind 23-25, 18-25, 25-18, 25-22, 15-10 win over UE.
Four FEU players were in double-figure including Karl Ian dela Calzada who scored 23 points. Gregorio Dolor got 19, Jeric Gacutan and Alexis Faytaren made 12 each, and Joshua Barrica added 11.
