Lady Eagles tame Golden Tigresses in UAAP volleyball


Reigning titlist Ateneo de Manila University tamed University of Santo Tomas (UST), 25-18, 25-22, 25-22, to stay unbeaten in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 77 women’s volleyball tournament on Wednesday at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

The Lady Eagles extended their amazing run to 12 straight, two wins away of sweeping the elimination round and an automatic slot in the finals. The Golden Tigresses, on the other hand, absorbed their seventh loss against five wins.

As expected, power-hitting Alyssa Valdez topscored for Ateneo with 21 points.

Earlier, former champion De La Salle University posted an easy 25-6, 25-17, 25-17 over University of the East (UE) to earn its 12th victory.

The Lady Spikers are now 12-1 wile the Lady Warriors are still winless in 12 attempts.

Most Valuable Player candidate Ara Galang led the Lady Spikers with 10 points including two aces in the match that lasted for just 70 minutes.

Mika Reyes added 10 points and playmaker Kim Fajardo delivered five points and had 28 excellent sets for La Salle.

No UE player finished in double digits as open hitters Angelica Dacaymat and Shaya Adorador were limited to just nine and five, respectively.

In the men’s division, defending champion National University (NU) and Adamson University whipped their respective foes to secure spots in the Final Four.

NU outclassed Far Eastern University, 25-13, 25-23, 25-23, with Jan Berlin Paglinawan leading the scorers with 12 points, Peter Den Mar Torres and Rueben Inaudito contributing 11 points each.

The Bulldogs improved to 8-4 while the Tamaraws fell to 5-7.

Adamson, on the other hand, trounced UE, 25-16, 25-15, 25-20, for its ninth win in 12 games. The Red Warriors remained winless in 12 outings.

Joining NU and Adamson in the Final Four are last year’s runner-up Ateneo de Manila University (9-2) and UST (8-3). EMIL C. NOGUERA
