Defending champion Adamson University blanked University of the Philippines, 6-0, to take the series opener of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 77 softball finals on Tuesday at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium in Manila.
Season 76 Most Valuable Player Annalie Benjamen scored 12 strikeouts to lead the Lady Falcons to a 1-0 series lead.
“I reminded them not to think that even we have the thrice-to-beat advantage, it’s a sure win. We have to work hard for it,” said multi-titled Adamson mentor Ana Santiago.
The Lady Falcons posted a 3-0 lead on Queenie Sabobo’s run-batted-in (RBI) in the third inning. Krisna Paguican had RBI triple for a commanding 4-0 advantage in the fourth inning before closing out the game with two more runs.
“Championship na ito, ibang level na [kaya kailangan ibigay na ang lahat],” added Santiago, head coach of the national women’s softball team also known as the Blu Girls.
The Game 2 is set on Thursday at the same venue with the Lady Falcons gunning for their fifth straight title and 14th overall.
The Lady Maroons, on the other hand, will need to win thrice to dethrone the Lady Falcons, who hold a thrice-to-beat incentive after sweeping the elimination round.
