Defending champion De La Salle University shoots for its fourth straight title when it faces Ateneo de Manila University in Game 3 of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 76 women’s volleyball finals today at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Game time is set at 4 p.m.
The Lady Archers are just a win away of completing a rare four-peat and ninth title overall. The Lady Eagles, on the other hand, must win two more games to dethrone their rivals.
Ateneo won in Game 1, 17-25, 25-23, 25-13, 25-20, before La Salle mounted a strong comeback in Game 2 via a 25-14, 25-20, 19-25, 26-24 decision.
“We’re back in the series [after our Game 2 win]and I’m hoping that we could bring this momentum in Game 3. We’re expecting them [Ateneo] to make some adjustments but we’re prepared,” said La Salle head coach Ramil de Jesus.
Last year’s co-Most Valuable Players (MVP) Aby Marano and Ara Galang as well as middle hitter Mika Reyes, open spiker Cydthealee Demecillo and playmaker Kim Fajardo are expected to lead the Lady Archers’ offense.
Galang had a solid performance in Game 2, nailing 17 points including 16 attacks while Reyes, who scored just eight points in Game 1, bounced back with a 14-point showing.
Ateneo, for its part, will be relying on Season MVP, Best Server and Best Scorer Alyssa Valdez along with Ella de Jesus, Amy Ahomiro, Aerieal Patnongon, and rookies Julia Morado and Michelle Morente.
Reigning Best Digger and Best Receiver Denden Lazaro also expressed readiness come Game 3 after suffering an ankle injury the last time out.
Ateneo head coach Thai Anusorn Bundit always reminds his team to “play happy. Heart strong.”
