Former titlist De La Salle University guns for a share of the lead anew as it tackles a dangerous University of the Philippines (UP) side in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 78 women’s volleyball tournament today at The Arena in San Juan City.
The Lady Spikers will be battling the Lady Maroons at 4 p.m. while Adamson University takes on University of Santo Tomas at 2 p.m.
Defending champion Ateneo de Manila University currently holds the top spot with 8-2 followed by La Salle (7-2) and UP (6-3) – both hopefuls of the twice-to-beat advantage in the Final Four.
The Lady Spikers are fresh from a straight-set victory over the Tigresses but La Salle head coach Ramil De Jesus warned his ward not to be complacent against the Lady Maroons.
“Maganda ang galaw ng UP ngayon kaya talagang pinaghandaan namin sila kung anong meron sila ngayon. UP is a young team pero hindi mo makikita sa galaw nila na mga bata sila. Pag tumaas pa lalo ang kumpiyansa ng mga bata, mas lalo silang mahirap talunin,” De Jesus stressed.
Open hitter Ara Galang, middle blocker Mika Reyes and veteran setter Kim Fajardo are expected to lead the Lady Spikers along with Mary Joy Baron, Kim Dy and Cydthealee Demecillo.
The Lady Maroons made waves in their previous games by beating powerhouse teams including the Lady Eagles and the Lady Bulldogs led by rookies Isa Molde and Diana Carlos.
“We have to play our A-game against La Salle. We have to control their services and improve our reception. Sana makalaro kami ng maayos. Win or lose sana may improvement. ‘Yun naman ang habol namin,” said UP mentor Jerry Yee.
Besides Molde and Carlos, UP will be banking on Katherine Bersola, Nicole Tiamzon, Jewel Lai and Marian Buitre as well as libero Arielle Estranero.
