San Sebastian College seeks to resume its sweep bid as it clashes with an unpredictable Jose Rizal University today in the women’s division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Season 92 volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.
Powered by reigning Most Valuable Player Grethcel Soltones, the Lady Stags overpowered the Emilio Aguinaldo Lady Generals, 25-13, 25-20, 25-22, Wednesday to nail their fifth straight win and remain the only unbeaten team.
Unlike seasons before though, Soltones was far from her deadly form as she was not in full strength, averaging just 16 points, second only to league scoring leader Francesca Racraquin of San Beda, who is norming 17 hits a game.
San Sebastian coach Roger Gorayeb though is expected to go more to his hardworking support cast headed by Joyce Sta. Rita and Katherine Villegas, who both averaged in double digits.
“This sport is a team game so we have to perform as a team and not rely too much on individual talent,” said Gorayeb.
The Lady Stags have the chance to sweep the single-round elimination that will catapult them straight to the best-of-three finals.
If it happens, it will reduce the Final Four to a stepladder semis wherein the Nos. 3 and 4 teams battle in a knockout duel with the winner taking on the No. 2 squad, which will enjoy a twice-to-beat edge.
The Lady Bombers, spearheaded by Shola Alvarez, however, will not be a pushover though as they have won two of their five outings and are expected to go all out to get their third win in their 1 p.m. duel that will keep them in the Final Four hunt.
In the other match, St. Benilde (4-1) tackles EAC (0-5) at 11:30 a.m.
