Far Eastern U rattled off five straight points in the fifth set to seize control then warded off University of the Philippines’ spirited fightback to pound out a 27-25, 25-22, 18-25, 23-25, 15-8 decision and gain the top spot in Group B at the close of the Shakey’s V-League Season 13 Collegiate Conference elims at The Arena in San Juan on Saturday.
The Lady Tams came out strong after blowing a 2-0 set lead then pounced on the Lady Maroons’ erratic plays down the stretch to hack out the one-hour, 57-minute win and complete their sweep of the elims for a 4-0 card in the carryover quarterfinal phase of the mid-season conference of the league sponsored by Shakey’s.
The Lady Tams scored on a quick hit to gain a 12-8 cushion in the fifth then won the next two points on the Lady Maroons’ spiking errors before
Celine Domingo came away with a block to finish off the Diliman-based squad.
UP settled for a 3-1 mark while UST had a 2-2 record when they head to the next phase along with the other top three finishers in Group A of the tournament backed by Mikasa as official ball and Accel as official outfitter.
Toni Rose Basas pumped in 25 hits, including 22 kills, while skipper Remy Palma backed her up with 15 markers and Jerrili Malabanan and Bernadeth Pons combined for 21 points for the Lady Tams, who struggled but pulled through in the first two sets.
But the Lady Maroons refused to give up and fought back behind Isabel Molde, Diana Carlos, Justine Dorog and Nicole Tiamzon, winning the next two frames, only to slow down at the start of the decider to the dismay of coach Jerry Yee.
Molde and company did fight back to pull within 6-7 but just couldn’t match the Lady Tams’ strong finishing kick and check on their errors that hastened their downfall.
Molde and Carlos churned out a pair of 20-hit outputs while Dorog added 14 points and Tiamzon finished with 10 markers.
