• Lady Warriors in semis, Tigresses stay alive


    NICOLE Mendina took the scoring mantle with 15 points as University of the East (UE) secured a second straight Final Four berth with a 50-30 rout of Ateneo de Manila University on Wednesday in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 79 women’s basketball tournament at the Araneta Coliseum.

    The Lady Warriors led by as much as 26 points to improve their record at 8-3 slate in third place.

    University of Santo Tomas (UST) nipped Far Eastern University (FEU), 62-58, in the other match to keep its semis hopes alive at 4-7.

    Defending champion National University (11-0) and De La Salle University (8-2) continue to hold the 1-2 spot in the tournament.

    The Lady Eagles, who were led by Hazelle Yam’s 11 points, fell to sixth spot with their eighth loss in 12 matches.

    Jhenn Angeles had 18 points and eight rebounds while Shanda Anies added 14 points and eight boards for the Tigresses.

    UST is just trailing idle Adamson University (5-6) by a full game in the race for the last semifinals berth.

    The Lady Tamaraws, meanwhile, failed to follow up their stunning 66-62 upset of the Lady Archers last Saturday as the Morayta-based dribblers slipped at 3-8 in seventh place.
