The Department of Education and the Provincial Government of Laguna signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the latter’s hosting of the 2014 Palarong Pambansa in May.
Governor Jorge ER Ejercito of Laguna province said Laguna has been awarded the hosting of the 2014 Palarong Pambansa after convincing the game’s executive committee of its capability to stage the annual multisports competition for student athletes.
A highlight of the event would be the unveiling of the 25-foot tall monument of the country’s national hero Jose Rizal. Born in the town of Calamba, Rizal was an expert in arnis, the Philippines’ national martial art and sport that will also be featured in this year’s edition of the Palaro. Sculptor Toym Imao, son of National Artist for Sculpture Abdulmari Asia Imao is the artist commissioned to create the statue.
Laguna boasts of modern sports facilities that include the Laguna Recreational, Education, Cultural and Sports Stadium, a 70-meter world-class archery range, a track and field oval, a football field and a dorm.
Over 2,000 elementary and high school students are expected to join this year’s Palarong Pambansa.
