• Lanao gov condemns political rival’s ambush

KIDAPAWAN CITY: Lanao del Sur Governor Mamintal “Bombit” Alonto-Adiong, Jr. condemned the ambush attack against his family’s political rival, Marawi City Mayor Fahad “Pre” Salic in Cagayan de Oro City.

Salic on Saturday together with his driver, identified as Cairoden Gunting, both survived the ambush which took place in front of Pryce Plaza Hotel along busy Mastersons Avenue.

Salic of the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) is contending with Adiong’s mother, Soraya Alonto-Adiong of the Liberal Party for the gubernatorial seat with four other competitors in next month’s polls. Adiong is running for vice governor in tandem with his mother.

Adiong said his administration “strongly condemns” the attempted murder on Salic and “any form of violence against humanity.”

Salma Jayne Tamano, public information officer of Lanao del Sur, said members of the Provincial Peace and Order Council (PPOC) held a special meeting on Saturday at the Provincial Capitol Complex in Marawi City condemning the attack on Salic.

She said the council, which is chaired by Adiong, produced a resolution which also states that the council is closely coordinating with the local government of Cagayan de Oro City, the Philippine National Police (PNP) and other concerned agencies for the immediate investigation of the incident.

Meanwhile, Cagayan de Oro city chief of police Senior Supt. Faro Antonio Olaguera told reporters that a special investigation task group (SITG) was created on Saturday with members from the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG), and other police units.

Olaguera said they see personal grudge as the motive in the attempted assassination on Salic and that it was not an election-related issue, but the official refused to divulge further details in their on-going investigations.

The police are also looking at other angles of the case while tracking the suspects.

A close associate of Salic told The Manila Times that the incident is most likely related to an on-going rido or clan feud between the mayor’s family and an unnamed clan.

The source cited the murder of Salic’s cousin — Aminoden Awar alias Otik, a Barangay chairman of East Basak in Marawi — staged last January by still unidentified suspects.

Otik was implicated in the ambush of an Army convoy in Mindanao State University in Marawi City in August 2012, the responsibility of which was claimed by the local jihadist group operating in the province.
