Lanao town police chief slain

MARAWI CITY, Lanao del Sur: The police chief of Poona-Bayabao town in this province was killed in an ambush on Monday evening here by unidentified gunmen riding a motorcycle. Senior Supt. Agustin Tello, provincial police director, said Senior Insp. Darangina Ditucalan was aboard his Mitsubishi pick-up going back to the police station along Sitio Boulevard, Barangay Lumbac Madaya when the assailants drove along and fired shots. Tello said Ditucalan had just submitted his accomplishment report on the campaign against illegal drugs and other crimes in his jurisdiction a few hours before the incident. Radical jihadists supporting the Islamic State operating in the province are being eyed in the fresh carnage targeting police officials aside from other suspects involved in the illegal drug trade in the town. Ditucalan was killed exactly a year after former police chief Supt. Al Abner Wahab Santos was slain by suspected members of the Khilafah Islamiyah Movement called by authorities as Maute group on October 17, 2015.
