Lawmaker eyes autonomy for CAR

BAGUIO CITY: Ifugao Rep. Teddy Baguilat Jr. said he and other lawmakers from the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) will work to gain autonomy for the Autonomous Region of the Cordillera.

A draft of the measure will be finalized soon, he said.

“As Congress will focus on the Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL), the focus on the application for the Cordillera Autonomy will soon follow, we must not be discriminated (against),” Baguilat added.

While there is yet no clear vision on what model of federalism will be followed, the lawmaker said CAR will be under one state together with Regions I and II.

Baguilat emphasized that for the sustainability of the region, the sources of revenue should be considered.

He said once it gains autonomy, the region will have direct control of its resources such as agriculture, mineral and water to provide electricity in most parts of the region.
