• Lawmaker wants cash, not rice for CCT families

Rep. Edgar Erice of the 2nd District of Caloocan City (Metro Manila) on Tuesday suggested giving additional cash assistance instead of rice subsidies to beneficiaries of the Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) Program of the government, to help the country’s poorest families.

In a news briefing in the House of Representatives, Erice said the government, in pushing for rice assistance, will only waste a large amount of money in terms of transportation, food packaging and distribution.

He added that rice assistance during the watch of then-President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo only showed that a higher percent of the budget was wasted in transporting and packaging the rice.

“It is better to give cash to poor families … it does not rot, get destroyed and can’t be overpriced,” Erice said.
In his first State of the Nation Address, President Rogrigo Duterte promised the 4.4 million beneficiaries of CCT 20 kilogram rice bags monthly from the National Food Authority.
