A lawyer, who according to the police was involved in several cases, was gunned down on Friday by an unidentified assailant while on his way to his office in a sub-urban village in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental.
Negros Oriental Provincial Police Office (NORPPO) director Senior Supt. Harris Fama, in a report sent to the PNP National Operation Center in Camp Crame, identified the shooting victim as lawyer Rex Perewperew.
Fama said the lawyer was about to take a public transportation around 10:25 a.m. along Sitio Laguna Road in Looc when the gunmen riding a motorcycle drove by and shot him at close range.
Perewperew did not reach Siliman University Medical Hospital alive.
Fama said they are looking into several angles in the murder of Perewperew, who was reportedly imprisoned in Siquijor province in 2008 in connection with the illegal drugs case filed against him.
He added that the slain lawyer was also allegedly involved in cases of smuggling and land grabbing.
Fama said that he immediately ordered Supt. Jovie Atanacio, Dumaguete chief of police, to conduct chokepoint operations in the entire city. He likewise directed the Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) to assist investigators in exhausting all possible angles to get to the bottom of the killing
