Lea Salonga celebrates 35 years in show business

Just like the lyrics of her classic Disney princess song from Aladdin, “A Whole New World” has opened anew for international singer and actress Lea Salonga a she celebrates her 35th year in show business this December.

“And it’s all because of TV,” she told The Manila Times. “Being a judge on The Voice of the Philippines has made my 35th anniversary more exciting because it’s opened up so many possibilities for me. The exposure to a wider repertoire of music I can sing, projects I can do, and more importantly, an exposure to a wider audience and happily a bigger fan base.”

Indeed, her weekly outing on the widely popular ABS-CBN 2 franchise of The Voice has made the world-class artist more accessible to the Filipino masses, who were once detached from—if not intimidated by—her international theater background and their highbrow impression of her music.

Everything has changed in a matter of one season, and according to Lea, this will be apparent in her upcoming anniversary concert Playlist at the PICC Plenary Hall on December 6 and 7.

In a separate interview with her brother-cum-musical director Gerard Salonga, “The audience are in store for something really different because Lea will be singing songs they wouldn’t expect to hear from her this time. And I agree—it’s all to do with her being on The Voice. It’s a great thing for her to be going through this on her 35th anniversary.”

Fittingly describing Playlist as a collection of all her favorite songs, Lea enthused, “We are hoping the fans get a little surprised when they hear all the songs I really enjoy listening to. In my last concert, we let the fans put in their requests. This time, I am hoping they get to know me a little bit better as I let them into my musical tastes.”

Joining Lea in this big reveal is a spattering of equally diverse guest artists, beginning with The Voice’s grand champion, Mitoy, whom she coached to victory. The new Miss Saigon Rachelle Ann Go will also share the spotlight with the original for what is sure to be a power-packed performance.

“I am so excited to be sharing the stage with my guests. I am so proud to be featuring Mitoy on a big concert stage after his victory in The Voice. And Rachelle Ann is one of the best voices our industry has seen,” added Lea.

At the helm of the concert is theater director Bobby Garcia, while Gerard’s ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra will provide the music to the distinctive voice of the one and only Lea Salonga.
