SENATOR Loren Legarda is likely to accept the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) portfolio after her term ends in 2019 because it was an agency that took care of the “poorest and most vulnerable population.”
“Let me just say that I would want to exercise very strong oversight functions over a department that takes care of the needs of the people,” Legarda said in a television interview on Monday.
Legarda is among those being considered to head the DSWD after the Commission on Appointments rejected the appointment of former secretary Judy Taguiwalo in August.
“I just like I do oversight functions with all other government departments but this (DSWD) is [a]very important department that should take care of the poorest and the most vulnerable population,” Legarda added.
The senator, however, declined to answer when asked if President Rodrigo Duterte offered her the DSWD post, but said that she was hoping that the president appreciated the work that she and the entire Senate had done to the proposed 2018 budget.
Legarda added the she would finish her term as senator in 2019. JEFFERSON ANTIPORDA
