LEGAZPI CITY: A Catholic priest of the Diocese of Legazpi described President Benigno Aquino 3rd and presidential aspirant Rodrigo Duterte as modern-day Herods for killing people.

Fr. Frederick Naga, currently with Mater Salutes College Seminary in Sipi, Daraga town, said in his homily on Sunday evening that the President and members of the House of Representatives who enacted the controversial Reproductive Health (RH) Law are “killers of today’s generation.”

“From the President down the line who have approved the RH law are modern Herods of today,” he said. He was referring to the Biblical character who, as a Roman-appointed king of Judea from 37 BC, ordered the murder of all infants in Bethlehem in an attempt to get rid of the baby Jesus whom he saw as a future threat to his reign.

The clergy also condemned the acts of self-confessed killer Rodrigo Duterte, mayor of Davao city and 2016 presidential aspirant, branding him as another modern-day Herod.

Duterte has been linked to extrajudicial killings in Davao reportedly carried out by the so-called Davao Death Squad when he assumed office, which the mayor himself had admitted in earlier interviews with the media.

“Killers of criminals are also modern Herods,” he said.

Aquino signed into law the Responsible Parenthood and Reproductive Health Act of 2012 (Republic Act No. 10354), known as the RH law in December 2012. It guarantees universal access to methods of contraception, fertility control, sexual education and maternal care measures.

The law, which provides access to contraceptives as a family planning method, met strong opposition from the Catholic Church.

    1. Fr. Naga, what do you call then the people who have failed or done nothing against all these criminals, corruptors and drug dealers who proliferate and profit from their nefarious deeds and who then donate some to the poor and even to different churches? I hope you could look up at issues in perspective and then compare who are the more judases. I also hope that you could appreciate the fact that for the longest time, our system and institution have proven to be ineffective and its getting worst in every administration. Would it not be better for you now to be sorry for all the ineffectiveness of our system and institutions against the evils of our society and then think twice before trying to cast a stone at others.

    2. If RH supporters and the likes of Digong are Herods for this “holier than thou” priest, what are they in this modern times? Sadducees and Pharisees perhaps?
