LEGAZPI CITY: A Catholic priest of the Diocese of Legazpi described President Benigno Aquino 3rd and presidential aspirant Rodrigo Duterte as modern-day Herods for killing people.
Fr. Frederick Naga, currently with Mater Salutes College Seminary in Sipi, Daraga town, said in his homily on Sunday evening that the President and members of the House of Representatives who enacted the controversial Reproductive Health (RH) Law are “killers of today’s generation.”
“From the President down the line who have approved the RH law are modern Herods of today,” he said. He was referring to the Biblical character who, as a Roman-appointed king of Judea from 37 BC, ordered the murder of all infants in Bethlehem in an attempt to get rid of the baby Jesus whom he saw as a future threat to his reign.
The clergy also condemned the acts of self-confessed killer Rodrigo Duterte, mayor of Davao city and 2016 presidential aspirant, branding him as another modern-day Herod.
Duterte has been linked to extrajudicial killings in Davao reportedly carried out by the so-called Davao Death Squad when he assumed office, which the mayor himself had admitted in earlier interviews with the media.
“Killers of criminals are also modern Herods,” he said.
Aquino signed into law the Responsible Parenthood and Reproductive Health Act of 2012 (Republic Act No. 10354), known as the RH law in December 2012. It guarantees universal access to methods of contraception, fertility control, sexual education and maternal care measures.
The law, which provides access to contraceptives as a family planning method, met strong opposition from the Catholic Church.
