Letran, Lyceum defend hold of top spot

OPENING day winners Collegio de San Juan Letran Knights and Lyceum University Pirates hopes to remain on the top when they take on separate foes on Saturday in the 89th National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) basketball tournament at the San Juan Arena in San Juan City.

Letran faces the Emilio Aguinaldo College (EAC) Generals at 6 p.m. while Lyceum meets the Arellano University Chiefs at 4 p.m. In the juniors division, the Arellano Braves battle the Lyceum Baby Pirates at 12 noon while the Letran Squires take on the EAC Brigadiers at 2 p.m.

The Knights gained a share of the lead following their 74-69 win over San Sebastian College on June 22 courtesy of Raymund Almazan, who notched 15 points on top of 20 rebounds.

The EAC Generals, however, are aiming to bounce back from their devastating 49-69 setback to University of Perpetual Help System DALTA  (UPHSD) Altas on Thursday. To pull off a win, coach Gerry Esplana is expected to lean on the prowess of Noubi Happi, Jan Niccolo Jamon, John Monteclaro, Elyzar Paguia and John Tayongtong against Letran’s Almazan, Nambatac, Cruz and Ruaya.

Lyceum, on the other hand, will try to bag a back-to-back victory to prove that their 70-66 triumph over defending champion San Beda Red Lions was not out of sheerluck.

A win by Letran and Lyceum will cause Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers and UPHSD Altas, both with 1-0 slate, to remain at the no.2 spot.
