Letran prepares 400th year celebration in 2020

Founded in 1620 by Don Juan Geromino Guerrero, Colegio de San Juan de Letran has been one of the oldest colleges in Manila, administered by the Order of the Preachers (Dominicans). A total of 81 rectors have managed Letran to this day.

Located within the walled city of Intramuros, Letran is as strong as the walls built around it—surviving wars, bombings, earthquake and other disasters.

Letran has also expanded throughout the northern part of Luzon: Letran Bataan—located in Abucay, Bataan, was founded in 2000; Letran Calamba—located in Calamba, Laguna, was founded in 1979; Letran Manaoag (formerly Our Lady of Manaoag College)—located in Manaoag, Pangasinan, was officially named as Colegio de San Juan de Letran-Manaoag in 2014.

The advancement of technology has paved the way for the Colegio to build better facilities, as students population arise.

Letran has produced heroes, noble men, martyrs, presidents, saints, athletes, influencers, senators, and other influential people in society. Being a Catholic school, the Colegio’s primary goal is for students to be able to live up to the nobility, generosity and discipline of a Knight.

In sports, Letran’s athletes have been battling for glory in different fields. Whether local or international, Letran has always made available its best athletes to represent not just the school but the country as well—be it badminton, basketball, chess, swimming, table tennis or volleyball.

Just last year, after 10 years of waiting and battling, Letran finally copped the NCAA Season 91 Men’s Division Basketball Tournament title through the determination, struggle, and hardwork of the players, most especially the love and support of the whole Letran community. This year, Letran once again reigned the NCAA Season 92 Badminton tournament, as the athletes took home the championship title.

Bannering its achievements on the academic field, Letran reigned as the Best Communication School by the Catholic Mass Media Awards (CMMA) in 2012. It also received awards locally and internationally, and is considered as one of the best schools in the Philippines. From pre-school, grade school, high school, college, and graduate school, Letran has everything to offer.

The Colegio was also granted Level 3 status by the Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (PAASCU) in the following programs: BS Entrepreneurship, BSBA Business Economics/ BSBA Economics, BSBA Human Resource Development and Management, BSBA Marketing Management/ BSBA Marketing, and BSBA Operations Management; AB Advertising, AB Broadcasting, AB Communication, AB Political Science, AB Philosophy, and Bachelor of Secondary Education major in English and Mathematics.

Letran has been preparing for the 400th year grand celebration since December 2015, the same month that the community released the official logo that will be used for the quadricentennial celebration. The official countdown will be held on November 24, 25, 28 and 29.
