Letran stakes hold of solo lead

The Letran Knights will stake their hold of the top spot while the San Sebastian College-Recoletos Stags and Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals, two teams sharing the sixth spot, will part ways today when they battle each other in the 89th National Collegiate Athletic Association basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.

The Knights of Coach Caloy Garcia are currently leading the tourney with 9-1 card followed by both San Beda Red Lions and University of Perpetual Help System Dalta Altas, who are bearing identical 9-2 win-loss slates.

The Letran Knights face the Lyceum Pirates at 6 p.m. following the Stags and the Generals battle at 4 p.m. The secondary matches pit San Sebastian Staglets against EAC Brigadiers at 12 noon and the Letran Squires against Lyceum Junior Pirates at 2 p.m.

Coach Garcia cautioned his wards not to be complacent because Lyceum is a strong team. The Knights needed a strong second half blitz before securing a 61-53 win in the first round of the elimination on July 20.

They were down by a lone point, 12-13, in the first quarter and going into the third period at 31-32, before finally establishing a nine-point lead, 49-40, going into the final period.

The Stags of coach Topex Ro-binson are riding on the momentum of their 81-74 conquest of the Generals on July 22.
