Letran wins Game 2, forces rubber match


THE Letran Knights won 79-74, over defending champions San Beda College Red Lions to level the best-of-three titular series of the 89th National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) basketball tournament, 1-1, at The Arena in San Juan City on Thursday.

Mark Cruz, Raymond Almazan, Kevin Racal and Mcjour Luib displayed determination to avenge their 68-80 loss in Game One on Monday. Both squads will dispute the title in a winner-take-all match on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at the same venue.

Letran was in a sluggish start but recovered in the third period to establish a 54-51 lead at the start of the pivotal period.

After the fifth deadlock, 64-64, via Art de la Cruz’s jumper with still 5:34 left, the Knights led by Jamil Gabawan, Luib and Ford Ruaya initiated an 8-0 run to post a 72-64, lead with only 3:30 remaining.

In the juniors division, Ranbill Tongco and Joshua Caracut combined for 31 points as the San Beda College Red Cubs beat College of Saint Benilde-LSGH Greenies, 65-59, to secure their fifth straight crown.
