BATANGAS CITY, Batangas: Speculations in the Batangas political arena have come to an end when Sen. Ralph Recto endorsed Vice Governor Marc Leviste as gubernatorial bet of the Liberal party (LP) in the 2016 elections.
Leviste, a three-term vice governor, was overwhelmed with the latest development as he has been longing for the endorsement of Recto and wife Batangas Gov. Vilma Santos-Recto.
He profusely thanked the Recto couple in his acceptance message.
The endorsement was made at Lima Hotel in Malvar, Batangas, last Friday in the presence of provincial board members, municipal and city mayors and department heads of the provincial government.
“The trust and confidence of [the senator and the governor]are very vital to any candidate. Proof to that is the interest of national personalities like Secretary [Manuel Roxas 2nd]. The more it is true for candidates like me in Batangas,” Leviste said.
Senator Recto, in a text message, confirmed the endorsement saying, “Yes, I endorsed Mark as LP candidate for Batangas. He is VSR (Vilma Santos-Recto) vice gov for 3 terms and the only LP member.”
Leviste earlier announced that he will give way to Recto if the senator decides to run for Batangas governor in 2016.
Recto, however, decided to run for reelection in next year’s polls.
Leviste will face three other contenders for the provincial seat, namely former governor and congressman Hermilando Mandanas of the United Nationalsts Alliance, Batangas Fourth District congressman Mark Llandro Mendoza of Nationalist People’s Coalition and AGAP party-list Rep. Nicanor Briones.
Briones was also expecting the endorsement of the Rectos.
He, however, will continue to run with another political party after failing to win the nod of the LP.
