Government officials in Yolanda-hit areas in Eastern Visayas want to name Pope Francis “Super Pope.”
An article on the official website of the papal visit committee stated that a resolution to name Pope Francis “Super Pope” was sponsored by Nestor Abrematea, a newly installed council member of the Sangguniang Bayan of Tabon-Tabon Leyte. Tabon-Tabon is located 45 kilometers South of Tacloban, City.
A part of the article states: “It is the city government’s gesture of expressing gratefulness to Pope Francis for the inspiration he gave to the victims of Yolanda and the joy and comfort he gave to those still grieving.”
Abrematea said that the resolution is the people’s way of expressing their admiration for the Pope who braved typhoon Amang just to be with the survivors of super typhoon Yolanda and celebrate Mass with them.
He added that the Taclobanons are grateful that Pope Francis chose to visit Tacloban of all the cities in the Visayas and Mindanao.
Pope Francis decided to visit Tacloban on January 17 even if Eastern Visayas was under typhoon signal No.2.
The Sangguniang Panlungsod of Tacloban led by Vice Mayor Jerry Yaokasin had also passed a resolution expressing gratitude to Pope Francis for his apostolic journey to the city.
Fr. Eliseo Loreto, Chief Vicar of St. Anthony of Padua parish in Tabon-Tabon, said that the 270 pilgrims from his parish present during the Papal Mass were also touched by the message of Pope Francis.
“They went on a pilgrimage to Tacloban not just to hear the Mass of the Holy Pope but to be inspired by him as well because they needed that,” he said.
Tabon-Tabon parish was among the areas badly hit by super typhoon Yolanda.
