OPERATIONS of the Light Rail Transit Line 1 were stalled during the early morning rush hour Thursday after a transformer caught fire limiting the power supply.
LRT Operations Director Rodrigo Bulario said that the heavy rains Wednesday night may have triggered a short circuit or grounding.
“May sumabog ho na transformer sa LRT 1 depot. Resulta nawalan ng kuryente ang mga tren natin doon, [A transformer exploded at the depot, resulting in power failure]” Bulario said in a separate interview aired over radio station dzBB.
“Dahil dito, tuwing 15 minuto lamang nakakaakyat ang mga tren sa LRT 1 depot imbes na tuwing 3 minuto, [As a result, it takes 15 minutes for every train to load, instead of the usual three minutes]” Bulario said.
He added that while the train operations were affected because of the limited source of power, a rectifier was used as an additional source of power.
As of press time, Bulario said there were eight trains left that have to be included in the transport system. Meralco personnel arrived on the scene to repair the transformer that caught fire.
