Nine-year-old Esang de Torres, second runner-up of The Voice Kids Philippines Season 2 in 2015, has just gotten the second biggest break of her barely year-old career. The Manila Times has learned that renowned musicale theater producer Cameron Mackintosh handpicked the small wonder to star in the ongoing Les Miserables production in Manila, and pronto!
According to an insider at Concertus Manila, one of the local producers of the tour, the young singer will become one of the alternates for little Cosette beginning April 8. Esang is now attending rehearsals.
The source added that Mackintosh made the decision from the recommendation of original Miss Saigon Lea Salonga, who served as de Torres’ coach on the ABS-CBN franchise of the The Voice Kids. Besides playing Kim when Miss Saigon first premiered in London’s West End, Salonga was also chosen to perform as Les Mis’ Eponine in the 10th anniversary production of the show at the Royal Albert Hall in 1995, and thereafter, Fantine in New York’s Broadway.
Showing at The Theater at Solaire in Pasay City, Les Miserables has been extended until April 24.
