The success of the MBC National Choral Competition in bringing the choral community to the public eye for the past six years has caught the attention of Interkultur Germany—the group behind the World Choir Games—which has long wanted to stage an international festival right here on local shores.
This will finally become a reality on December 11 to 15, when it teams up with Manila Broadcasting Co. (MBC), Star City, the Philippine Choral Directors Association (PCDA), and Globe Telecom in mounting Sing N Joy Manila at the Aliw and Star Theaters. Audiences will be treated to stunning harmonies from the best choirs in the world in the classical, sacred music, folkloric, and pop music genres.
In preparation for this, MBC has announced qualifying auditions for Philippine choirs, which will be held on August 10 and 11 at the Aliw theater in Pasay; August 17 in Baguio; August 24 in Cebu; August 31 in Davao; and September 7 in Iloilo. Children’s choirs, as well as non-professional groups—mixed choruses, all-male, and all-female ensembles—are invited to contest the slots open to local choirs, whose participation will be subsidized by MBC. Former champions of the MBC National Choral Competition from 2007 to 2012 have automatically been invited into the contest proper.
Bronze, Silver and Gold Certificates will be awarded in each category, with the choirs that earn the highest scores taking part in the Grand Prix, where the over-all winner will receive $5,000 and the championship trophy. Friendship concerts and workshops under top choral directors Kirby Shaw (USA) and Jonathan Velasco (Philippines) are also included in the program.
