Don Papa Rum, the small batch premium rum made in Negros bagged notable awards for its package design at the Los Angeles International Spirits Competition (Laisc) 2013.  Winning four prizes, it received the Gold in Overall Package; Gold in Illustration; Gold in Graphics; and the title Package Design Best of Show.

“We’re especially proud of this win, where Don Papa did a clean sweep of the packaging design awards because Los Angeles International Spirits Competition is seen as the Oscars of [spirits]design in LA,” said Stephen Carroll, founder of Bleeding Heart Rum Company, maker of Don Papa Rum.

The Laisc has set the standard for judging distilled beverages, and each year with an esteemed panel of judges awards the best spirits from around the world.

Don Papa Rum now holds an extensive list of design awards including its most recent win announced in July at the International Spirits Challenge where it won a gold medal in the Design and Packaging Logo category. This particular award recognizes the best creativity, innovation and design functionality of a brand.

Other design awards the product has received are the 2013 San Francisco World Spirits Competition; Applied Arts Design Awards 2013 in the wine/beer/spirits category; and the Communication Arts Design Awards’ 54th Design Annual for Packaging. The brand was also recognized in 2013 by GD USA Magazine, the news magazine for graphic designers and creative professionals.

Don Papa Rum’s packaging was designed by New York-based graphic design firm Stranger and Stranger, and depicts the inspiration behind the name of the rum—Negros patriot Papa Isio. It features an exotic twist on the historic Spanish landlords and a set of intricate illustrations depicting 50 animals and insects from the Philippines.  The packaging makes Don Papa Rum not only an ideal gift but a beautiful tabletop object to admire as well.

“With this packaging we want to offer our local and foreign travelers a striking product to represent our beautiful country, and of course the experience of a great tasting rum as well,” said Andrew Garcia, general manager of the company. “We are proud that Don Papa Rum is gaining more accolades in Europe, USA and the rest of Asia.”
