Longer Christmas holiday train operations sought

Extended operating hours for Metro Rail Transit 3 (MRT 3) and Light Rail Transit Lines 1 and LRT Line 2 have been proposed by administration vice presidential candidate and Camarines Sur Rep. Leni Robredo for the benefit of the public during the Christmas rush.

Robredo on Friday said longer operating hours for the trains will help lessen traffic congestion since it gives shoppers the choice to ride the trains instead of using their cars.

LRT Line 1 (Monumento-Baclaran-Monumento) operates from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. during weekdays and 5 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. during weekends and holidays.

LRT Line 2 (Santolan-Recto-Santolan) runs from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. during weekdays and 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. during weekends and holidays.

The highly congested MRT 3 (North Avenue-Taft Avenue-North Avenue) runs from 4:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.

“Extended operating hours for MRT 3 and LRT 1 and 2 would ease the burden of the public who are out shopping for gifts and or just visiting places with their loved ones,” Robredo said.

“A lot of people are also coming from attending parties and reunions that could be quite exhausting that they would want a faster mode of transportation going home,” she added.

In addition, Robredo called on authorities to beef up security in malls, train stations and other places frequented by people to avoid any untoward incidents.

“It’s better to be safe than sorry because bad elements are also out there looking to take advantage at our people,” she said.
