Loyola, Stallion enter UFL Cup semifinals

Loyola Meralco Sparks FC and Stallion FC complete the Final Four of the United Football League Cup 2015 after beating their opposition at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium on Saturday.

The two first division clubs concluded the cup’s quarterfinal round with poise and now look forward as they join Ceres La Salle FC and Kaya FC in the final four.

Despite a slow start, Loyola FC managed to slip past the tough Manila Jeepney FC, 3-0, to book a semifinals berth.

A goal-less silence marked the greater part of the opening half of the meeting between the two top tier squads as no offensive outburst connected from either side in the first 35 minutes of their clash.

However, an untimely tackle by Manila Jeepney defender Joshua Mulero on star striker Phil Younghusband inside the box prompted a penalty kick awarded to Loyola, which then paved the way for the termination of the uneventful deadlock as the latter sank the ball from the spot.

Three minutes after, a subsequent conversion from the Sparks found its mark in the 38th minute courtesy of Joaquin Cañas off a header directly in front of the posts of Patrick Rallos to increase their lead to 2-0 before halftime.

With just a few moments left before the final whistle, substitute Anton del Rosario, who came in for James Younghusband in the 66th minute, converts a Lee Joo Young corner to cap off the three-goal outing of their side.

Meanwhile, Stallion FC dumped fellow top tier club Pachanga Diliman FC, 5-0, to secure the last spot the in tournament’s final four.
