The Liberal Party (LP) welcomed the possible entry of former Sen. Panfilo Lacson into the 2016 presidential derby.
Representatives Ben Evardone of Eastern Samar and Edgar Erice of Caloocan City of the ruling Liberal Party (LP) sees Lacson’s planned foray as a positive development. The party has yet to decide if it will field Interior Secretary Manuel “Mar” Roxas as its standard bearer in 2016.
“The more the merrier. We should also welcome the entry of (Davao Mayor Rodrigo) Duterte. This will give people wider choices. I’m sure the people will pick the best for the country,” Evardone said.
Lacson, an ally of President Benigno Aquino 3rd, earlier bared his intention to run for president next year. Lacson briefly served as the Head of the Office of the Presidential Assistant for Rehabilitation and Recovery which was tasked to monitor the implementation of repair and rehabilitation efforts for the victims of typhoon Yolanda in November 2013.
Duterte, who is being urged to run for president in next year’s polls, had repeatedly said that he has no plans to seek the country’s highest post.
Erice said Lacson’s possible presidential bid is no threat to Roxas.
“As far as we are concerned, there can be no other best candidate who will be able to continue the reforms and the economic upsurge of this country except for Secretary Roxas. He has integrity, competence and experience,” he said.
