AF Payments, Inc. and Light Rail Manila Corp. (LRMC) announced on Friday that all stations on the northbound direction of Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT-1) will be implementing the new Automated Fare Collection System beginning September 20.
The reusable beep card can now be used for all journeys on LRT 1 and LRT 2.
“Over the past six weeks, our technical and operations teams, together with the DOTC [Department of Transportation and Communications] and the LRTA [Light Rail Transit Authority], have been working round the clock to complete all equipment installation and end to end testing so that LRT 1 train riders can benefit fully from the beep card and use it on both directions at the soonest possible time,” Peter Maher, chief executive officer of AF Payments said.
He added, “We are pleased to say that we are now ready to activate the new ticketing system on September 20.”
This development will put to a stop to the selling and use of paper coupons in all stations of LRT 1.
AF Payments expects to launch the beep card on the Metro Rail Transit (MRT) 3 over the coming weeks.
The beep card is the new contactless payment solution developed to make the payment process more convenient across all three rail lines as it allows seamless transfers from one rail to another.
The beep card uses a more powerful chip-based system and will serve as an electronic micropayment solution in day-to-day payments.
LRMC is a joint venture company of Ayala Infrastructure, Metro Pacific Light Rail Corp. and Macquarie Infrastructure for the operations, maintenance and construction of the Cavite Extension for LRT 1.
