ILOILO CITY: Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog on Monday said a light rail transit (LRT) project is feasible on Panay Island and will create a big economic impact in the island’s four provinces and boost the tourism industry. Mabilog wrote the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) with a subsequent follow-up with the Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC) asking for a feasibility study to build an LRT from Iloilo City to the Iloilo towns of Leganes, Zarraga, Pototan up to the province of Capiz and eventually to Kalibo, Aklan up to Caticlan, Malay in northern Panay as a gateway to Boracay Island. Mabilog said study to be financed by the DOTC will also consider northern Iloilo lines to reach the scenic spots, another line to southern Iloilo to pass by the historical towns of Guimbal, Miagao and San Joaquin and up to province of Antique. He said the LRT is the cheapest and fastest mode of transport in Metro Manila, Europe and the United States.
