LUCENA CITY: The Elvis Presley hit “Jailhouse Rock” took on a new meaning on Wednesday morning when 100 Sigue-Sigue Sputnik gang members went on a rampage at the Quezon Provincial Jail (QPJ), killing three inmates and wounding 17 others.
It all began when gang members tried to stop the transfer of fellow inmate Antonio Sa–tumba to the Talipan District Jail for bad behavior. Satumba is said to be the Sputnik gang leader at QPJ. His father and two brothers are also QPJ inmates but police described them as well-behaved.
At the press briefing after the incident, Provincial Jail Warden Princesito Heje said Satumba locked himself inside his cell and pretended to be asleep when prison guards were about to transfer him.
A hundred Sputnik gang members then blocked and assaulted the jail guards with “sumpak” (improvised firearms), bladed weapons, brass knuckles, stones, and a .22-caliber revolver.
Authorities said they fired warning shots but this did not stop the gang members. During the melee, some inmates were killed while others were wounded, including several jail guards who were stoned.
The casualties were identified as Manolito Palma, Jose Escasa and Christian Contemplacion although this was not confirmed by the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology warden.
Heje added that Satumba is scheduled to be transferred to Bicutan where hardcore inmates are housed.
