MILITANT youth group Anakbayan on Thursday called on Education Secretary Armin Luistro to condemn the militarization of lumad (indigenous people) schools and killing of volunteer teachers in lumad communities. Anakbayan also called on the Department of Education (DepEd) to junk its Memorandum 221 which, they claimed, will allow military and paramilitary groups to camp in schools. “Why is the DepEd silent regarding the killing of teachers and the militarization of one of its renowned schools? They should condemn the killings and order the pullout of military and paramilitary groups immediately,” Vencer Crisostomo, the group’s national chairman, said. He added that Save Our Schools Network and other groups had been seeking the help of DepEd regarding the closure of lumad schools but that the Education department is yet to issue a statement or memorandum on the matter. “DepEd’s continued silence on the killings implies support and encouragement to military and paramilitary groups attacking the lumad,” Crisostomo said.
