Lyceum of the Philippine University shocked defending champion College of St. Benilde, 25-22, 24-26, 25-18, 20-25, 15-10, on Tuesday to bolster its Final Four bid in the women’s division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Season 92 volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.
Team captain Cherilyn Jhane Sindayen fired a team-best 16 points including key hits in the fifth and final set to power the Lady Pirates to a share of fourth spot with the Arellano University Lady Chiefs on 3-1 (win-loss) records.
La Rainne Fabay, Patrice Mabelle Inton and Christine Miralles chipped in 14, 13 and 12 hits, respectively, to help seal it for Lyceum, the many-time Women’s NCAA champion before it joined the NCAA.
The Lady Blazers, for their part, absorbed their first defeat after winning its first four outings and fell to second place behind Grethcel Soltones and the San Sebastian Lady Stags, who are now the lone undefeated team with a 4-0 card.
Lyceum coach Emil Lontoc said they just want respect.
“I hope they will notice us now,” said Lontoc, one of the most experienced coaches in the country today, in Filipino.
In men’s action, St. Benilde trounced Lyceum, 26-28, 25-19, 25-17, 25-21, to jump to joint No. 2 alongside San Beda College on 4-1 slate.
In juniors’ play, Lyceum routed La Salle-Greenhills, 25-11, 25-16, 25-8, to seize a share of the lead with Emilio Aguinaldo College with three wins apiece.
