Lyceum of the Philippines University and Jose Rizal University (JRU) won against their respective rivals in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Season 92 men’s basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City on Thursday.
The Pirates won over the College of Saint Benilde Blazers 75-58.
Rookie guard Adrian Alban posted 21 points, Cameroonian Mike Nzeusseu had 15 points and 22 rebounds, Shaq Alanes notched 11 points while Wilson Baltazar contributed 13 points to improve the Pirates’ win-loss record to 2-3.
“Prior to this game, I reminded them that Saint Benilde is not an easy opponent,” said Lyceum coach Topex Robinson during the postgame interview. “I’m really happy the players responded very well in this game.”
The Pirates, after posting a 17-7 lead at the end of the first period, sustained their attacks en route to a 33-23 advantage at halftime.
Lyceum extended its lead to 59-45 after the third frame before completely dominating the fourth quarter.
The Blazers are still winless in six games.
In the first game, shooting guard Teytey Teodoro scored the winning shot to seal JRU’s 60-59 win over Emilio Aguinaldo College (EAC). The victory broke the Heavy Bombers’ two-game losing skid.
Teodoro, who finished with 21 points highlighted by five triples, hit the go-ahead jumper with less than six seconds remaining in the game to give JRU a 60-59 lead.
Mark Cruz finished with 14 points and six rebounds while Jordan Dela Paz notched six points, 10 rebounds and five assists also for JRU.
“I don’t see any positive thing in the way we played this game. It’s ugly. I don’t know what is wrong. I guess it’s the effort and the attitude. You can’t teach everything,” JRU coach Vergel Meneses admonished his wards.
Francis Munsayac scored a crucial basket in the last 11 seconds providing the Generals a slim lead, 59-58. But Teodoro vanished their hopes by sealing the Heavy Bombers’ victory.
The Heavy Bombers improved their win-loss record to 2-3 while EAC’s dropped to 1-4.
In the juniors division, Lyceum repulsed CSB-La Salle Greenhills 82-77, while JRU whipped EAC, 85-67.
